A Devotional Thought from the Pastor
Genesis 1:1-2 – In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
Also look at John 1:1-3. In the beginning, God made. Through these verses we see God identified in three persons at creation. There are several other scriptures where the three persons of God are visible. Many more include two of the three.
“Trinity” is not a word found in the Bible, but a concept used to understand the nature of God. The idea of Trinity was developed in the first few centuries after Jesus. Leaders among the early church wanted to find a way to communicate and understand God as He is revealed in scripture. The Creeds were written in the same period of time – particularly the Nicene and Athanasian – by councils that were held to settle doctrinal disputes.
God is three persons. God is One. That is hard for us to understand. We can understand three separate entities. We can understand singularity. But the trinity is complicated. The three persons of God can operate independently and separately. Yet they are united in the Godhead.
The Athanasian Creed, the long one we only use in worship occasionally, adds some helpful insights. We confess, “The Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God; and yet there are not three Gods, but one God.” It also explores the two natures of Christ – both God and Man in one person.
Understanding the complexities of God is not required to be saved. Trust and faith in the salvation found in Jesus is what we need. We won’t understand all aspects of our faith, otherwise would it be faith? We believe in One God, in Three Persons. God, give us deeper faith!
