Each of us likes the feeling of belonging and gratification when we get chosen. From times on the playground when all the kids are being divided into teams for kickball, to job applications that get us an interview with the company – we like to get picked. Even though emails or envelopes that arrive that tell us we qualify for a special deal are more than likely asking us to purchase something, there can still be a sense of satisfaction.
God’s people were chosen. Beginning with Abram (later Abraham), God had made a choice of a certain man whose descendants were set apart from the rest of the people on the planet. God doesn’t ever explain his reasons for the choice. Abram was not noted as one who “found favor in the eyes of the Lord” (that was Noah), or “a man after God’s own heart” (David), or “blameless and upright” (Job). But God chose him and he followed. The family of Abra(ha)m became the nation of Israel. God consistently treated Israel in a special, unique way. Jesus even says he came for the lost sheep of Israel (Matthew 15:24).
But God’s kingdom has room for more than one nation and people. Revelation tells us that every tribe, nation, tongue, and race are represented around the throne of God. Written much earlier, Psalm 67 says that the saving power of God will be known among all nations. Thanks be to God that people who are not descendants of Abraham can be included. Paul writes that those of faith are the children of Abraham. Through faith in Jesus we are included among those who praise God!
