May 9, 2023 Acts 17:22-23 – Paul stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “Men of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious 23 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you.
Most cultures have places of worship, altars or temples, to some kind of God. The Greeks in Paul’s day were no different. They knew, because it is written on our hearts, that there was something beyond human understanding, some greater power active in the universe. Having an unknown god is admitting that they didn’t comprehend what they worshipped.
Thanks be to God that He has revealed Himself to us in the person and work of Jesus! He also has given us the Bible through which we can learn about Him. We know Him as our Creator, our Savior, and our Lord. Now we need to make Him known to others who continue to relate to an “unknown God.” Let’s proclaim the excellencies of Him who called us out of darkness into marvelous light. (1 Peter 2:9)
